Campaign Update -- Pre-Primary Canvass!
Dear friends and supporters,
Missouri's primary election is next Tuesday. Yes, I'm running unopposed for the Libertarian Party's nomination, but it's still a key date!
- This week, I mailed out 300 postcards to known Libertarians and Libertarian Party supporters in the 2nd US House District, asking them to vote a Libertarian ballot in the primary.
- I have 600-700 of those postcards left ... but they're not postcards any more, they're "door-hangers." Tomorrow morning, I'll be walking targeted areas in the district and putting those postcards (and a general Missouri Libertarian Party election brochure) on doors. Will you join me? For details, see:
http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/953877/
... and feel free to give me a call at 314-750-6993 if you need more information.
The link above has maps, etc. We'll meet in the parking lot of a Target store near the first targeted (pun intended) neighborhood, Meacham Park, at 11 am and take it from there.
- SIGNS ARE HERE! Well, not here, actually, but sort of. They got mailed to my treasurer's house instead of mine for some reason. I'll be picking them up tonight, and will have them available tomorrow. Even if you can't walk precincts with me, drop by and get a sign for your yard -- and your polling place!
In 2006, 215 people in the district voted a Libertarian primary ticket. I'm hoping we can double, perhaps even quadruple, that with a combination of mailing, precinct-walking and polling place signage.
What's the point? Here's the short version:
- The combined third party vote in this district in a general election has never exceeded 2.1% since 2000. We're going to run that number up. Hopefully WAY up. The starting point for doing that is next Tuesday's primary. If we can multiply Libertarian primary turnout, that's a big leap toward multiplying Libertarian general election turnout.
- Republican incumbent Todd Akin's vote percentage has been sliding every two years -- even though in the last two elections, his Democratic opponent raised and spent only a little bit more for the whole election cycle than I have ALREADY in this one! And the Democrats have at least two candidates with significant funding this time. Ladies and gentlemen, the "safe district" status of Missouri 2 has left the building. This is now a competitive race, and the Libertarian Party can be the balance of power in it. A strong Libertarian primary turnout may help force him to engage, campaign and debate ... and that can only be good for the district and for the Libertarian Party.
At this moment, I'm not asking you for money ... I'm asking you for WORK. Help me get that literature out. Help me get signs up in yards and in front of polling places. Spend a couple of hours on Sunday calling your friends and asking them to vote a Libertarian primary ballot.
On Wednesday, we'll look at the results and decide what comes next. If what we did worked, we'll do more of it -- a LOT more of it -- between now and November. If it didn't work, we'll try something different.
See you tomorrow morning!
Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp
